Blogs and Wikis
QuadBlogging (http://quadblogging.com/)
This website give students the opportunity to create their own blogs as well as observe and comment on other students blogs. On this application, they are able to communicate with other classrooms in other schools. There are even opportunities to communicate with students from other countries. This gives the classroom a chance to learn more about the world around them and also work on their own creativity skills. I think this would be very useful for the classroom because students can improve their writing skills and also build more teamworking skills by completing blogs with other students. I would personally use this more in a middle school classroom because they will be writing more and be reading more advanced language from other schools. So I believe the older the student is, the better this application would be for them. Free but looks like maybe some problems accessing.
Kidblog (http://kidblog.org/home)
This website allows the teacher to create a blog and students are allowed to add to the blog. Students can contribute by either creating their own post or by commenting on other student’s posts. Blogs allow for students to work at home in order to extend their knowledge of what was learned in class, and students can interact with their classmates and the teacher. A common fear of using blogs with students is that postings may be inappropriate. This website allows teachers to check every posting and comment before it is displayed to the whole class, allowing the teacher to catch anything inappropriate before it is posted. Additionally, parents are allowed to create an account in order to view their child’s postings and comments. This blog is creative, allowing for different themes for creativity to fit each teacher’s needs. Free trial only, then must purchase.
