Social Studies
Newsela (https://newsela.com/)
This website actually has separate sections for social science, science, and ELA. Newsela is a news website that gives students the chance to read about current events at a level they are comfortable with. It includes many different topics and could be used in a language arts or social studies setting. There are five reading levels included on Newsela and each article is written on each reading level, and in both English and Spanish. This allows for an entire class to read about the same content, but at a level that’s right for each student. Newsela is also common core-aligned and includes engaging quizzes that test critical thinking and close reading. Students can individually search for articles or teachers can select articles for the class or for a student and assign that article to them through their account. Teachers can see who reads what story, who passes the quizzes and takes notes on the article. Students can take interactive annotations on articles and participate in written-response questions, both of which can be viewed by teachers. The teacher binder also allows for tracking of student progress and displays reading-level achievements. I think Newsela is very useful for elementary teachers who are looking to incorporate current events and nonfiction literature in their classroom. It is also useful for testing reading comprehension and improving individual student reading levels. Limited free access.
